At IBC 2026 MXL won the Innovation Award for Content Creation, and the open, software-based production stack looked more real than ever. The unresolved question is who owns the commercial fabric it runs on, and whether openness survives the answer.

The technology question is settled


MXL, the Media eXchange Layer, took the IBC 2026 Innovation Award for Content Creation, backed by a mixed crew of the EBU, CBC/Radio-Canada, Grass Valley, Lawo and Riedel, with the Linux Foundation on governance. The debate over whether it works is effectively over. Lawo's Andreas Hilmer says they have proven it at scale. Grass Valley's Lee Buchanan frames MXL as a way to modernize at your own pace. And Daniel Clasen with the Qvest team is already open-sourcing the scaling problems. The direction of travel is set.

When the demos are packed away, the questions worth carrying home are not whether MXL and the wider DMF story work. It is who ends up owning the fabric the technology runs on, and how much openness will survive that ownership.

A multi-vendor economy is a multi-license economy


The catch is written into the architecture itself. The EBU's Dynamic Media Facility Reference Architecture builds a six-layer model designed, in its own words, to reduce vendor lock-in and stimulate a multi-vendor economy. That is the right goal. But a multi-
vendor economy is also a multi-license and multi-contract economy, and that side of it has had far less attention than the media
plumbing.


Dynamic facilities break static licensing


A Dynamic Media Facility is elastic by design. Applications from many vendors spin up and down against shared media as production demands change, yet per-device, perpetual licensing was never built for that. As estates fill with software from Grass Valley, Lawo, Matrox, Ross, TAG, Qvest and others, broadcasters inherit license sprawl, no single view of what is entitled versus what is actually used, and a widening gap between spend and utilization. That is a cost and governance problem, not a signal-flow one.


A vendor-neutral way to aggregate the layer


One practical path is to treat licensing and entitlement as a layer in their own right, aggregated across vendors rather than managed vendor by vendor.
